Do I Need Skate Shoes?

Do I need to wear shoes or skate shoes when skateboarding? This is a rather common question, and a good one - skateboarding shoes might look cool, but do you really need another pair of shoes for skateboarding? And, for things like longboarding, do you need to be wearing shoes at all?
